Twentieth Century is the story of a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer named Oscar Jaffe (John Barrymore). He took an unknown lingerie model named Mildred Plotka (Carole Lombard) and transformed her into superstar actress, Lily Garland. The pair produced hit after hit, but Lily soon grew tired of Oscar's controlling and possessive ways. The final straw was when he hired a private detective agency to spy on her and even tap her phones. Lily discovers all of this and leaves Oscar and his shows for the promise of Hollywood. With his star gone, Oscar's shows keep flopping and his creditors become irate with the amount of money that is owed: so much so, that Oscar must dress in disguise. He needs to get out of town and boards the train, Twentieth Century Limited, and it just so happens that Lily is on the train as well. Oscar's wheels start turning and he starts thinking of a plan to win Lily back to his side. Can Oscar start his ascent from the gutter back to stardom? Or will Lily reject him for the final time and expose him and his disguise?moreless
