Two Friends is Oscar-winning director Jane Campion's 1986 feature-length film debut, and is a perceptive and bittersweet examination of the complexities of a lost friendship. Based on a novel by Australian author Helen Garner, the film centers around 15-year-old best friends Louise (Emma Coles) and Kelly (Kris Bidenko), who experience a strain in their relationship when Louise moves on to a school to which Kelly is forbidden to attend. This event leads both girls to pursue very different courses in their lives, making decisions that serve to drive them even further apart. Louise experiences friction with her mother (played by Kris McQuade), while Kelly experiments with drugs and sex. The pacing of the film is episodic, taking the viewer backwards in time over the course of a year, beginning from the last moments of the girls' friendship, and following chronologically back to the moments when their bond was at its strongest.
