Two Women is a 1960 Italian drama starring Sophia Loren in a story about a widowed mother's efforts to protect herself and her daughter during World War II, and the way their relationship changes under the stresses of human tragedy. Loren plays Cesira, a shopkeeper from Rome who was left in sole custody of her daughter after her husband's sudden death. Eleonora Brown plays Rosetta, Cesira's daughter. Cesira and Rosetta have grown distant in some respects, as Rosetta has devoted herself to her religion and Cesira has struggled with the challenge of being a single parent during troubling times. When the Allied forces begin bombing Rome, Cesira decides to flee to the mountains to the North, hoping they can find a simpler life away from the horrors of war. Two Women is a riveting story of love and human suffering that won Sophia Loren the Academy Award for Best Actress, the first time the award was given to a non-English performance.moreless
