PG-13

Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns is a 2008 romantic comedy movie, written and directed by Tyler Perry, who also stars in the film, alongside Angela Bassett, Rick Fox, Lance Gross, David Mann, Jenifer Lewis, Sofia Vergara, Tamela Mann, Margaret Avery, and Frankie Faison. The movie is about Brenda (Angela Bassett), a newly laid off single mother struggling to raise three children in inner city Chicago. When she receives a letter notifying her of the death of a father she has never known, Georgia packs up and heads to Georgia, along with her three kids, for the funeral. What she does not expect are the Browns—her late father's crude, fun-loving Southern family who welcome her in with open arms and crass humor. Between long country afternoons and county fairs, Brenda starts to get to know the family she never had and, along the way, finds herself falling in love. Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns was nominated for a 2008 Black Reel Award and a 2009 Image Award.

Metacritic Score

  • 60

The New York Times A.O. Scott

What he serves up -- a mixture of moralism and forgiveness, semibawdy humor and cautionary drama, mockery and affection -- may sometimes lack coherence, but never integrity.

  • 60

    Variety Joe Leydon

Often plays more like "Tyler Perry's Greatest Hits" as it recycles various elements from the writer-director's earlier works.

  • 50

    Los Angeles Times

Even his brief appearance onscreen as his most popular character, Madea, the sassy, tough-talking grandma, feels like a calculated addition rather than an organic necessity.
