Movie Summary

Director:
Jonathan Mostow
Released:
2000
Rating:
PG-13
U-571 is the 2000 film about submarine warfare during World War II. The film stars Mathew McConaughey as a crafty and gifted Executive submarine officer ordered on a top secret mission to board a German U-boat submarine and steal it's Enigma cipher machine in order for the US military to decode German messages and put an end to their superior underwater warfare. However, the simple snatch and grab mission turns south when Andrew Tyler (McConaughey) and Mike Dahlgren (Bill Paxton) lose control of their boat and must seek refuge in the German U-boat. Now the American submarine crew must find a way to get the cipher machine back to Allied water in a German rig, a mission to prove much harder than the original task. With a damaged radio, they appear to be nothing more than an enemy threat and at any moment stand to be blown out of the water. The film also stars Harvey Keitel, Thomas Kretschmann, Jon Bon Jovi, Jack Noseworthy, Will Estes, and Tom Guiry.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 60

The New York Times A.O. Scott

Yet there is so little characterization that when the sub goes down, you may find yourself confused as to which of the supporting cast members lived through the torpedo blast.

  • 50

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

You can enjoy U-571 as a big, dumb war movie without a brain in its head.

  • 30

    Variety Todd McCarthy

The submarine goes deep but the story never does in U-571, a good old-fashioned WWII picture that is exciting in only the most superficial way.
