Ugetsu is a 1953 classic film set in sixteenth century Japan which follows the lives of a farmer and the people in his small village. Genjuro (Masayuki Mori) visits the city of Nagahama to make a living peddling his wares. He and his neighbor Tobei (Eitaro Ozawa) have a business making clay pottery, and the demand is high. They quickly begin to get rich. Tobei has dreams of becoming a samurai and, while they're away, considers buying a samurai outfit with their newfound earnings. However, upon returning to their village, their wives warn them that there is a good chance that their village will be attacked by a Japanese warlord who is nearby. They grab their families and flee just before the village is attacked and looted. Now the two men must start from scratch to build the small empire about which they have fantasized. Inspired by the short stories of Guy de Maupassant and Akinari Ueda, the movie is a poignant image of struggle and family life.moreless
