Uncle Nino is an American movie that deals with a once close, but now distant and dysfunctional family living in Chicago. The father, Robert Micelli (Joe Mantegna), is an exploited executive who is desperately trying to earn a promotion. As such, he has little time for his wife and kids. His loving wife Marie (Anne Archer), had given up cooking as a hobby. Bobby (Trevor Morgan), their rebellious fourteen-year-old son, has formed a rock and roll band with his friends who happen to be his preferred company. Gina (Gina Mantegna), their twelve-year-old daughter, is in desperate need of a dog and her father's attention. Their lives take an interesting twist with the sudden arrival of Robert's elderly Uncle Nino (Pierrino Mascarino), from Italy. His old-fashioned ways catch the attention of both the family and their neighbors. Uncle Nino takes on a mission to help the family come together by teaching them simple, yet important family values.

Metacritic Score

  • 70

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

A solid family film that strikes a shrewd balance between tough-mindedness and sentimentality and boasts a fine cast.

  • 50

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

A family movie that some will find wholesome and heartwarming and others will find cornball and tiresome. You know who you are. I know who I am. This is not my kind of movie.

  • 40

    The New York Times

Aggressive heartwarmer, which turns out to be much more of a heartburner.
