Undead is a 2003 black comedy that includes plenty of traditional zombie horror. The small Australian town of Berkeley seems like the least eventful place on earth to lovely young Rene (Felicity Mason), a beauty pageant contestant. When she loses ownership of her family farm, Rene takes it as a sign to finally leave her town and find bigger and better things. But a group of mysterious meteorites suddenly strike Berkeley, and in the wake of the disaster it becomes clear that the peaceful little town has turned into a zombie infestation. Marion (Mungo McKay), formerly known as the town weirdo, turns out to be a savior in the zombie apocalypse, able to offer shelter for other survivors. Rene, Marion and a small group of fellow survivors plot their escape from Berkeley. They discover that the zombies are killed by a bullet to the head. However, as Rene and the others try to escape, it becomes increasingly clear that the zombies are not their only problem. Rene has to face almost insurmountable odds and hilarious obstacles in this zombie movie with a twist.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 60

    Variety David Stratton

Precociously inventive horror pic that combines brain-eating zombies with outer space aliens.

  • 40

    The New York Times

In the end, the film is a stale, derivative mess that borrows heavily from every zombie and alien movie worthy of imitation, to only ho-hum effect.

  • 30

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

However visually striking, this Australian film is ultimately as tedious as it is derivative.
