Underworld is a 1996 crime thriller with an off-kilter sensibility, moments of jarring violence and rat-a-tat banter about Broadway shows. On Father's Day, ex-con Johnny Crown (Denis Leary) decides to go after the mobsters who gunned down his father as part of a string of gangland murders. He thinks that his old friend, nightclub owner Frank Gavillan (Joe Mantegna), was the mastermind behind the killings, but he is not sure. He decides to enlist the help of a sex therapist (Annabella Sciorra), who just happens to be Frank's ex-wife. Further adding to the psychological confusion, Johnny has spent his seven years in prison earning a psychology degree and his therapist's license. He sees his crusade as a form of therapy. Meanwhile, all these hardened criminals seem to be big fans of Rogers and Hammerstein and Irving Berlin and are not afraid to show it. This oddball production was directed by Roger Christian from a script by Larry Bishop, son of Rat Pack comedian Joey Bishop.
