Up The Down Staircase is a 1967 drama about Sylvia (Sandy Dennis) and her journey of self discovery. Sylvia is a young English teacher who has chosen her profession out of a genuine desire to change young people's lives for the better. When she finds a job at a large high school in a city, Sylvia is determined to win the hearts and minds of all her students. However, after her first day behind the desk, Sylvia realizes that her idealistic visions were only idle daydreams. The students greet her with aggression or disinterest, completely different from the enthusiastic students Sylvia pictured in her imagination. Joe Ferone (Joe Ferone) is a rebellious, wise cracking slacker who finds his new teacher very attractive, but not worthy of respect. Alice Blake (Ellen O'Mara) is shy and awkward, but secretly pines for one of Sylvia's fellow teachers (Patrick Bedford). As Sylvia struggles to bring order to the classroom and instill a love of learning in her students, she also finds herself learning and changing in unexpected ways. The rigid and uncompromising school administration only makes things more challenging for idealistic Sylvia.
