Up Tight is a grim treatment of black militancy in America in this modern remake of the 1935 film The Informer. The film portrays the true anger of the ghetto and the plight of the people who live there. The story follows desperate and unemployed Tank Williams (Julian Mayfield) as his life dissolves. Tank mishandles his job in a Cleveland robbery and causes his accomplice and good friend Johnny Wells (Max Julien) to murder a guard during their getaway. A member of a black militant group, Williams is expelled from the gang after they discover his incompetence. It is the first of a series of bad choices that continues to alienate him from his former friends and leads him to face his fate. Up Tight also stars Raymond St. Jacques, Ruby Dee and Frank Silvera. The film was directed by Jules Dassin and written by Ruby Dee, Jules Dassin, and Julian Mayfield.
