Uprising is a 2001 war-drama film based on the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in 1943 in German occupied Poland. A band of fearless young Polish Guerillas and freedom fighters led by a school teacher, Mordechai Anielewicz (Hank Azaria), revolt against the Nazis when they learned that thousands of their fellow Ghettos are exterminated in Terblinka by being cremated alive in gas ovens, instead of being sent to labor camps as part of a deportation and resettlement plan. The uprising dates from April 19 to May 16, 1943. The guerillas and freedom fighters, composed of 400 to 1,000 members, are primarily equipped with pistols and revolvers, while some carry a few smuggled rifles and automatic firearms. Although incomparable to the size and weaponry of the German army, they caused substantial and considerable damage to the Nazi forces that resulted in the escape of thousands of their fellowmen from the holocaust. The story is taken from the testimonial account of one of the few survivors of the freedom fighters, Simha Rotem (Stephen Moyer), and includes actual footages of the historical uprising. The film is directed by Jon Avnet starring several award winning actors that include Donald Sutherland, Jon Voight, David Schwimmer, and Hank Azaria.moreless
