Vatel, directed by Roland Joff'', is a 2000 French period drama based on a true story about the impact the monarchical system of government had on love, money, culture and politics during the 17th century. The year is 1671 and Prince de Cond'' (Julian Glover) must devise a plan to save his bankrupt province in the west of France. The Prince invites King Louis XIV (Julian Sands) to stay at his country ch''teau in Chantilly for a three-day feast in an attempt to impress him before asking him for financial support. Chef Fran''ois Vatel (G''rard Depardieu) is put in charge of proceeding and must make sure that the King experiences a weekend of extravagances and all-out decadence. The King arrives with his favorite lady-in-waiting, Anne de Montausier (Uma Thurman), and chief court intriguer, Tim Roth (Marquis de Lauzun). All three are suitably impressed, but when Vatel falls in love with Anne, Prince de Cond'''s cunning scheme to save his province is threatened.moreless
