2000

Aging beautician Angèle (Nathalie Baye), already wounded by a long-ago romance, gets awkwardly dumped at a train station. Witnessing how she turns around a humiliating situation, younger sculptor Antoine (Samuel Le Bihan) becomes so smitten that he breaks up with his own fiancée and sets out to win Angèle's heart. Meanwhile, Angèle attempts to quash the budding romance of her young co-worker, Marie (Audrey Tautou), and a much older widowed client (Robert Hossein), despite their obvious rapport.

Metacritic Score

  • 90

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

There is a sophistication about affairs of the heart, about the wisdom and the risks of romantic involvement that is more than quintessentially French. It's irresistible as well.

  • 67

    Entertainment Weekly Owen Gleiberman

Clever and smooth, yet, like Angèle herself (or Nathalie Baye), the film is almost too placid for its own good.

  • 50

The New York Times Dana Stevens

Has occasional moments of heat, but not much warmth. And while it is pretty enough to look at, real beauty eludes it.
