Vera Cruz is a 1954 classic western starring Gary Cooper and Burt Lancaster. Set in 1866 during the time of the turbulent Franco-Mexican War, two Americans, Ben (Gary Cooper) and Joe (Burt Lancaster), decide to cross the border and take advantage of the Mexican uprising to make some money. Ben, looking to restore his civil war losses, and Joe, always in search of a quick buck, sign up as mercenaries for the Mexican Emperor Maximillian (George Macready). Emperor Maximillian hires the pair, along with other questionable characters, to escort the Countess Marie Duvarre (Denise Darcel) across violent lands to the port of Vera Cruz. Along the way, they discover that the Countess is secretly transporting $3 million in gold intended to support the French Army. However, with Mexican rebels on their trail, the mercenaries soon realize that the Countess' operation is not as clandestine as she had assumed. All are tempted by the allure of the gold, and what follows is a series of double-crosses that has everyone questioning their allegiances.moreless
