Victim is a 1961 film centered around a closeted homosexual who inevitability embraces his preference and runs with it. The film - directed by Basil Dearden (The League of Gentleman, The Man Who Haunted Himself) - was very controversial upon its release during the 60's, in fact it was banned from the United States. Melville Far (Dirk Bogarde) seemingly has it all - he has a highly successful political career as a London barrister, not to mention a beautiful wife, Laura (Sylvia Syms) who loves him dearly. But dig a little deeper and we find that Bogarde is homosexual - something he hides from the public eye and himself. He is faced with several ethical decisions when a group of malicious blackmailers threaten to "out" him should he not comply with orders. That is when he decides to openly accept his homosexuality and fight them face to face regardless of the consequences. Victim offers insight into the ways in which homosexuality was viewed in the 60's - you will recognize how things have progressed since then.moreless
