Victor Victoria gives Oscar-winning actress Julie Andrews the chance to play "a woman playing a man playing a woman." During the Depression era in Paris, singer Victoria Grant cannot even afford a meal but has the good fortune to meet Toddy (Robert Preston), a flamboyant cabaret performer who also faces destitution after getting fired. He devises a brilliant plan for their future; he will pass her off as Polish Count Victor Grazinski, a female impersonator. Their scheme works brilliantly and her act becomes the toast of the town until King Marchand (James Garner), a Chicago gangster, finds himself hopelessly infatuated with her/him. Unable to believe that he would ever be attracted to a man, he begins to spy on Victor/Victoria. King's girlfriend, Norma Cassady (Leslie Ann Warren), vows revenge and his hulking bodyguard, Squash Bernstein (Alex Karras), decides to share his long-held secret of being gay himself. The comedic complications multiply as Victoria and Toddy try to hold onto their lucrative gig. Director Blake Edwards ("The Pink Panther") blends romance, musical numbers and gender bending into this 1982 comedy, which won an Academy Award for Best Score.
