Vincere is a 2009 Italian historical drama directed by Marco Bellocchio. The film tells the story of Ida Dalser, the first wife of Benito Mussolini, leader of the fascist party and dictator of Italy during the Second World War. Ida (Giovanna Mezzogiorno) and a young Benito Mussolini (Filippo Timi) meet and fall in love prior to the First World War. The young couple is married and Ida bears Mussolini a son. Ida sells most of her possessions to support the unemployed Mussolini, as he is trying to keep his newspaper afloat. When World War I breaks out, the small family becomes separated. By the end of the World War I, Mussolini has married another woman and denies both his marriage to Ida and that her child is his. During the fascist rise to power in Italy, the existence of Ida and her son are kept secret, and they face harsh suppression while fighting for their rights. Vincere also features Michela Cescon, Fausto Russo Alesi, and Pier Giorgio Bellocchio.moreless
