Viva Zapata! is a 1952 classic, describing the life of Emiliano Zapata (Marlon Brando) in his quest to liberate the Indians in Morelia from the ground landlords. When the corrupt, oppressive President Porfirio Diaz (Fay Roope) refuses to assist them in freeing their land, Emiliano calls his villagers to arms. Together with his brother Eufemio (Anthony Quinn) they rise against the dictator's regime. His influence rises hand over hand with each struggle. The number of followers that is willing to give their life for an honest distribution of land and resources grows, and with time and effort the masses manage to take over power. During the movie, Zapata takes the reign of the country, and returns home, with serious consequences. The second layer of this movie shows Emilianao Zapata in a desperate struggle to combine the task set upon him by his peers, with his desperate wish to get together with the woman of his dreams, Josefa (Jean Peters).
