Von Ryan's Express is a 1965 World War II adventure film that follows Colonel Joseph L. Ryan (Frank Sinatra) as he leads an escape from a prisoner-of-war camp in Italy. Ryan, who initially becomes unpopular with the British prisoners who dominate they camp, replaces Major Eric Fincham (Trevor Howard) who had been the camp's ranking officer prior to his arrival. One of Ryan's most unpopular decisions is notifying the camp's Commandant, Major Battaglia (Adolfo Celi, ) of the prisoners' escape tunnels in exchange for new clothes. When Battaglia fails to keep his promise, Ryan orders the men to strip and burn their clothes to force the Commandant to keep his promise. When the Italian guards flee the camp on news the Italian army has surrendered, the British seize Battaglia and put him on trial. Found innocent, Battaglia is not executed. When the German's return to retake the camp, Battaglia betrays them. Shooting the sick prisoners, the Germans load the remainder onto trains bound for Austria. Ryan and Fincham now have to work together to save the men.moreless
