Voodoo Island is a 1957 thriller about a man who is hired to investigate the disappearance of people on an exotic island. Philip Knight (Boris Karloff) is well known for his ability to disprove myths and hoaxes. However, when wealthy businessman Martin Schuyler (Elisha Cook, Jr.) calls upon him to debunk the rumblings that a nearby island has turned a man into a zombie, he has to work overtime. Schuyler's plan is to turn the island into a high-class resort, but what Knight and his crew encounter is anything but a vacation. More trouble awaits at every turn; if the natives casting voodoo spells don't get them, the man eating plants are sure to. Like so many horror films of the time, director Reginald Le Borg stretches his special effects dollar as far and wide as possible, sometimes with hilarious results. The lovely Beverly Tyler also stars in this B-movie classic that gives you exactly what you'd expect. The sets are campy, the acting over the top, but Voodoo Island casts a spell of delight as you follow along on Knight's disastrous expedition.moreless
