Voyage of the Damned is a 1976 World War II Holocaust drama about 937 Jewish Germans who believe they have found an escape from Nazi annihilation. In 1939, the S.S. St. Louis ship offers passage to Havana, Cuba from Hamburg, Germany. The passengers include a large number of Jews who have been frightened by "the night of the shattered crystal" to leave Europe completely, as well as Cubans returning home for a visit. Professor Egon Kreisler (Oskar Werner) and his wife, Denise (Faye Dunaway), have the wealth to begin a new life away from Hitler's Germany. Mira Hauser (Katherine Ross) has been working as a prostitute but wants to return home to Havana. Lili Rosen (Lee Grant) hopes the ship will take her husband and two children to safety. Captain Schroeder (Max Von Sydow) believes it is an ordinary Atlantic voyage, but receives word that the ship will not be allowed to dock. The Nazis were using the voyage as propaganda, and no other nation will allow the ship in its port and they must head back to Europe.
