Waiting to Exhale is a romantic drama film directed by Forest Whitaker that centers on four friends in Phoenix, Arizona as they each go through the difficulties of relationships with not only each other but also the men in their lives. For Savannah Jackson (Whitney Houston), she has everything she ever wanted Ð professionally that is. A successful TV producer, Savannah tries to handle her mother's pushiness for marriage while holding on for the day her married lover (Dennis Haysbert) will actually get divorced. Bernadine Harris (Angela Bassett) had given up her own life for that of her business husband (Michael Beach) to support him and raise their two kids. When he leaves her for his secretary, Bernadine begins to take control of her long abandoned life. Robin Stokes (Lela Rochon) finds herself at a loss as the more power she gains as an executive, the less chances she has of finding a man not intimidated by her success. After wrong man after the other, Robin has to decide whether to give her married boyfriend Russell (Leon Robinson) another chance or to kick him to the curb.
