Wake is a 2003 drama directed by Roy Finch. In the film, four very different brothers, Sebastian (Dihlon McManne), Kyle (Gale Harold), Jack (John Winthrop Philbrick), and Raymond (Blake Gibbons), have coincidentally all come to their ailing mother's house on the same night. The four brothers are not close and each has a different reason for being at the family home. It is clear through their interactions with each other that they are not happy about being there together. Sebastian is the oldest and is somewhat estranged from the family. Jack and Raymond live their lives outside the law. Several prostitutes, guns, and booze accompany them to their former home. Both men are running from the police, and Raymond's lack of intelligence makes their escape plan difficult. Kyle, the youngest, seems to be the strongest of the four; he has a job and a family. However, the presence of Raymond and Jack at their mother's home triggers horrific flashbacks from their childhood for the youngest brother.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 60

    Variety

Though the characters are not particularly interesting in themselves, their dynamic remains consistently engrossing.

  • 30

The New York Times Dave Kehr

    Instantly forgettable film.

  • 30

    Los Angeles Times

Nothing is allowed to build, so there is no tension or surprise left for the film's climax, resulting in a reductively pulpy rehash of 20th century American drama.
