Walkabout is a 1971 adventure film directed by Nicolas Roeg. It is based on the 1959 novel of the same name by James Vance Marshall. The father of a young girl (Jenny Agutter) and boy (Luc Roeg) drives his children to Australian outback under the guise of taking them for a picnic. When they get to a remote spot, he suddenly kills himself and sets the car on fire, leaving his kids stranded by themselves in the dangerous land. The children, whose names are never revealed, walk aimlessly through the desert in an attempt to get back to civilization. When they stumble upon a small oasis, they meet an Aboriginal boy who is doing a rite of passage in his tribe called a walkabout, which requires him to be on his own in the wilderness for a short period of time. With help from the Aborigine, the two children try to survive in the outback and make their way back home.moreless
