Wallis & Edward is a 2005 biographical drama about the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and their controversial romance. The film begins with the Prince of Wales, David (Stephen Campbell Moore), meeting Wallis Simpson (Joely Richardson), who is married to Ernest (David Westhead). Edward and Wallis begin an affair, which quickly becomes an open secret. After the death of his father, David must take the throne in 1936 as Edward VIII. Wallis eventually divorces Ernest and Edward tries to convince both the royal family and the British political class, prime minister Stanley Baldwin (Richard Johnson) and Winston Churchill (David Calder) to allow him to marry Wallis. As a twice-divorced American, Wallis cannot be accepted as a Queen of England, so Edward abdicates the throne for the woman he loves. Edward's stuttering brother Bernie becomes King George VI (Bill Champion) and does not allow Edward and Wallis to attend his coronation. He sends them far from England for the rest of their lives.moreless
