The African Elephant plays many diverse roles in the economy, ecology and security of East African countries. In this film, we learn about the economic importance of elephants, being one of the key species that attracts tourism to this region. We see how community conservation areas developed for photographic wildlife tourism are bringing many financial and lifestyle benefits directly to rural people. We see how protecting elephants and other wildlife also creates security for people. We learn how elephants have complex social structures and play an important role in the ecology of their environment. We see how overgrazing of land by cattle outside protected areas is causing encroachment of protected areas and is exacerbating human-wildlife conflict, and we learn how the wildlife authorities in Kenya are dealing with these challenges. We compare the treatment of an elephant destined for life in a circus with orphaned elephants reared by human caretakers before being released back into the wild. Finally we follow the trail of elephant poachers, armed with automatic weapons, as they are tracked down by the Kenya Wildlife Service. We learn of the lives lost by Kenyans in their struggle to protect their wildlife for the good of their nation. We are presented with the threats posed to both people and animals by the potential renewal of an international ivory trade.moreless
