War Drums is a 1957 western set in Arizona in the late 1800s. The movie follows the story of two unlikely friends: Apache chief Mangas Coloradas (Lex Barker), and white frontier settler Luke Fargo (Ben Johnson), as they attempt to cope with the rising tensions between their people. This friendship, however, becomes severely tested when they both fall for the same woman, the "Mexicana" captive of war, Riva (Joan Taylor). Their relationship is further strained when, against the wishes of his tribe, Mangas declares that he will take Riva as his wife. Despite opposition from the tribe's medicine man Chino (John Colicos), and Fargo's several attempts to persuade them otherwise, Mangas and Riva are eventually married. Meanwhile, in their quest for gold, a group of over-greedy white miners overstep their boundaries and violently injure several Apaches. This ultimately leads to the call for all-out war, a war which Fargo finds himself right in the middle of. Eventually he must make the difficult choice- fight alongside his people; or defend his Apache friend despite feelings of betrayal over Riva.moreless
