Ray Ferrier is a deadbeat dad dockworker who's turn with his two kids Robbie and Rachel falls this fateful weekend which turns out to be the worst weekend in the history of humankind. As freak lightning storms plague the area they live in, this soon reveals itself to be the onslaught of a terrifying and epic invasion of aliens from outer space. As titanic alien tripod war machines are resurrected from beneath the earth by the 'lightning,' Ray and his progeny gather what supplies they need and resolve to head to his ex-wife's house in Boston, desperately avoiding the ever increasing chaos effected by the invaders along the way.
