Warriors of Heaven and Earth is an action adventure film directed by He Ping that chronicles the hunt of Japanese emissary Lai Xi (Kiichi Nakai) as he is tasked by the emperor of China to kill former Chinese army Lieutenant Li (Jiang Wen), whose refusal to kill innocent prisoners led to a mutiny. As renegade Li becomes a roaming warrior in the Gobi desert, he takes on the job of protecting a caravan containing a young Buddhist monk and mysterious cargo, possibly carrying sacred texts and more, wanted by Master An (Wang Xueqi), a violent and merciless warlord, and the Gokturks, the people being imprisoned by the Chinese army. Though the taciturn Lai Xi has the chance to finally return home once Li’s killed, he joins forces with the fugitive in order to make sure the cargo makes it to its destination. Warriors of Heaven and Earth was China’s entry for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film with a reminiscent style to Hero, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and House of Flying Daggers.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 70

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

May be a period piece but there's nothing antiquated about it except an overly populated, initially hard-to-follow plot.

  • 60

    The New York Times

The best case for Warriors is its cinematic time travels and its peek into the natural wildness of a long-closed countryside.

  • 50

    Variety Derek Elley

A handsome although dramatically muddled Noodle Western.
