Wartorn 1861-2010 is the HBO documentary that examines post-traumatic stress disorder and military servicemen who are suffering from the disorder. Throughout our history it has been called all kinds of things, from hysteria, melancholia and insanity during the Civil War, to the "shell-shock" of World War I, and the combat fatigue of World War II. The special examines the anxiety, and looks at the lingering effects of combat on these soldiers and their families, from our first wars through the conflicts happening today in Iraq and Afghanistan. The special is produced by James Gandolfini, and directed by Jon Alpert and Ellen Goosenberg Kent. Alpert, Gooseberg Kent and Matthew O'Neill produced the special, and also produced other documentaries about the Iraq war for HBO. Getting a personal look at the stories of soldiers through letters, journals, photos and combat footage, we learn what these people go through and how it effects them. See WWII veterans speak about their PTSD for the first time, and interviews with families of those who suffer from the disorder. With suicide rates climbing for military servicemen and veterans, the public and armed forces are trying to get to the bottom of an issue that is hurting out troops even after they return home safely.moreless
