Water is a 2005 Canadian film about the lives of widows living in an ashram in Varanasi, India. Technically, although some years later, it is the third installment film of the Elements Trilogy. The first two films being Fire and Earth. The film is based on the novel of the same name, written by Bapsi Sidhwa. The film, while Canadian made was translated into Hindi. The film is set in 1938 Indian during a time in which the British Empire ruled over the land in what was called the British Raj. The story follows an eight- year-old girl named Chuyia (Sarala Kariyawasam) and her struggles as a young widow. The film comments on the commonplace practice of young girls being married off to older men and focuses on how when their husbands die, these women are sent to live in an institution called a widow's ashram to repent for the sins they committed that where thought to of caused their husbands death. The film chronicles what life is like living in the ashram and the interesting people she meets. The film also stars Indian actors Seema Biswas, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Waheeda Rehman, Raghuvir Yadav, and Vinay Pathak.moreless
