Waterland is a 1992 movie that is based on the novel written by Graham Swift. In the film, a history teacher named Tom Crick (Jeremy Irons) is in the midst of having a mental break down and manages to bring his own sorted family history into the class discussion. He tells tales of his childhood and how difficult it was to live with a mentally challenged brother and his father after the death of his mother. His tales include stories of incest, suicide, abortion and kidnapping, as the teacher desperately tries to sort out his life's struggles. The students become utterly confused by the tales their teacher is telling but Tom does not seem to be able to stop himself from continuing. Tom tries to come to terms with his past and to rid himself from the guilt and anger he has held on to. As the school officials learn of his odd behavior, they wonder if Tom is stable enough to continue teaching.moreless
