Watermelon Man is a 1970 dramatic comedy directed by Melvin Van Peebles. In the film, Jeff Gerber (Godfrey Cambridge) is a white man who has a successful career as an insurance agent, a very nice suburban home, a devoted wife, Althea (Estelle Parsons), and two adorable, preadolescent children. His friends see him as a jokester and good guy, but others see him as an obnoxious racist. One night, Jeff wakes up and thinks he is having a nightmare but is stunned to learn he is not. Jeff is struck with a unique condition that his doctors can not explain or cure. His new ailment shocks his family, makes his neighbors and co-workers ignore him and earns him the backseat on the bus he rides to work everyday. His once progressive thinking wife is starting to crack under the pressure and Jeff finds himself all alone to deal with his unique condition.
