1995
Rating:
PG-13

Waterworld is set in a future where Earth is submerged in water and humans must fight for survival on the lawless seas. The film follows a sailor referred to only as the Mariner, a solitary "drifter" who trades dirt, a valuable substance now that all land is underwater and people live on artificial atolls. The Mariner stops at an atoll to make a trade but is detained when pirates, known as Smokers, attack. Orphan Enola and her guardian Helen, citizens of the atoll, rescue the Mariner in exchange for helping them escape, since the Smokers have come to the island to capture Enola. The Mariner learns that the girl has something even more valuable than the dirt he trades; she is tattooed with a map to Dryland, a fabled region of natural land. However, with the Smokers on the trio's trail, the journey to dry land - and the future of the human race - may be doomed.

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan
