Weeds is a 1987 drama film that focuses on prison inmate Lee Umstetter (Nick Nolte), serving a life sentence without the possibility of a parole for his part in an armed robbery. Lee attempts to commit suicide twice, failing both times. Realizing he must change his life around, he starts reading books from the prison library. When Lee watches a play performed for the prisoners, he gets the inspiration to write and stage plays. One of his plays about serving life in prison is a success, attracting inmates and visitors alike. Lillian Bingington (Rita Taggart) is a theatre reviewer who is so touched by Lee's play, that she convinces the governor to release him from prison. When he is released, Lee decides he wants to continue writing and staging plays. To act in them, Lee gathers an array of former convicts including a shoplifter, Burt (William Forthsythe), a murderer, Bagdad (Ernie Hudson), and an embezzler, Claude (Lane Smith). Lee soon realizes the success of his plays outside of prison is not quite the same as it was inside the prison.moreless
