Welcome to Sajjanpur is a light hearted film about a literate man in a small Indian village who is hired to write letters for people. Mahadev (Shreyas Talpade) is an aspiring novelist who has delved into writing poetry, songs, and anything else that would help him hone his craft. However, being one of the few educated, and therefore, literate, members of his small village, much of his living is earned writing letters for fellow members of the village. His services are requested by people with every imaginable request, from the young man in love with a widowed woman, to the landlord who wants to remove his wife's rivals from a political race. However, when his childhood sweetheart Kamla (Amrita Rao) asks him to write letters to her husband in the city, a jealous and forlorn Mahadev writes completely different messages than what she asks, and fabricates her husband's responses; hoping to steal her away, he instead sets himself up for heap of trouble. Shyam Benegal directs this charming portrait of Indian life, where things, more often than not, seem to happen the way they happen.moreless
