Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • In the opening scene of the film, a sub-title saying Devil's Island is seen, with Ducotel's General Store on the island. In reality, Devil's Island was strictly a penal colony with no civilian establishments and Cayenne, the location of the store, is on the mainland 50 miles away.

    • As the camera perspective changes during the Christmas dinner table-setting scene, the plates on the table move back and forth into different positions.

    • When Aldo Ray is seen entering the store, he has a harmonica in his mouth, playing a melodic tune. Only he is not holding the harmonica with his hands and the song he is playing would be impossible to do without hands moving the harmonica back and forth across the lips. The harmonica sound was added in post-production editing.

  • QUOTES (1)

    • Joseph: We came here to rob them and that's what we're gonna do...beat their heads in...gouge their eyes out...slash their throats...soon as we wash the dishes.

  • NOTES (3)

    • According to articles published in the Hollywood Reporter, actors Audrey Hepburn, Van Heflin, Irene Dunne, Gig Young and John Derek were all considered and a couple even cast in the movie but none of them appeared in the final film.

    • The theme of the movie is based on Albert Husson's French play La Cuisine des Anges (the kitchen of the angels).

    • Prior to filming the working title of this film was Angels Cooking.
