1985
Rating:

Wetherby is the story of a middle-aged spinster schoolteacher, Jean Travers (Vanessa Redgrave), and the memories dredged up at a fateful dinner party with her friends. At the party, a strange young man, John Morgan (Tim McInnerny) reveals some of his emotional pain reminding Jean of her own past problems. The next day, the young man arrives at her house and shoots himself in the head while sitting in her kitchen. Written and directed by playwright David Hare, the film is told in discrete, interlocking flashbacks that explore the traumas and events that led to John Morgan's suicide and Jean living alone and unmarried. The flashbacks re-tell particular events from multiple perspectives in an attempt to unlock the cause and effect of life's little moments. Ultimately, Hare does not provide any easy answers, rather he questions the very notion that future events are foreseeable or even preventable. He suggests that Jean must come to grips with her life as it is and not as it might have been.moreless
