What Dreams May Come is a 1998 drama directed by Vincent Ward. It is an adaptation of Richard Matheson's classic 1978 novel. After a chance meeting in Italy, Dr. Christian "Christy" Nielsen (Robin Williams) and artist Annie Collins (Annabella Sciorra) fall in love. Many years later, they are married and have a perfect life with their two children, Ian (Josh Paddock) and Marie (Jessica Brooks Grant). Tragedy strikes when Ian and Marie are killed in a car crash, thrusting Annie into a seemingly inescapable depression. When Annie finally starts to heal, tragedy strikes again when Christy is killed in a car accident as well. Christy's spirit still exists after his death, and he finds himself in his own personal heaven, a stunning land of mountains, lush fields and crystal clear lakes. He happily awaits the arrival of his wife, but is shocked to learn that she has committed suicide and is now in Hell. Accompanied by his old friend, Albert (Cuba Gooding, Jr.), Christy sets off on an epic quest to free the woman he loves so that they can be together once more.
