What Rats Won't Do is a 1998 British romantic comedy by director Alastair Reid. The film is set in London and goes behind the scenes in the unusual English legal system. Kate Beckenham (Natascha McElhone) is a barrister who is on the rise, being on of a few female barristers in the male dominated British legal system. She ends up as opposing counsel versus the hotshot, irreverent Jack Sullivan (James Frain) who has never lost a single case. The case involves a younger woman, Mirella Burton (Parker Posey) who married an extremely elderly man who died, and he left her the inheritance instead of his son. Kate argues that Mr. Burton was confused and tricked by Mirella into giving him the money, and Jack argues that he was in love and wrote the will fully aware of his actions. As they battle it out in court, Kate is both infuriated and attracted to Jack. The romance heats up and Kate begins to see the other side of the case.
