What Women Want is a romantic comedy directed by Nancy Meyers and released in 2000. In the film, Nick Marshall (Mel Gibson) is a male chauvinistic advertising executive who thinks that every woman wants him. His handsome looks and flirting tactics are able to help him get most of the women that he wants, at least for one night. Expecting a big promotion at work, Nick is very upset when his boss, Dan (Alan Alda) gives the position to co-worker Darcy McGuire (Helen Hunt). To add to his troubles, his 15-year old daughter, Alex (Ashley Johnson) has come to spend two weeks with him. Rushing to get ready for work, Nick falls in the shower while holding a hair dryer and electrocutes himself. Waking up the next day, Nick realizes that he is able to read women's minds. He is saddened to hear what most women really think of him, especially his co-worker Darcy. He plans to take over her job by reading her mind and submitting her ideas as his before she has the chance. He soon faces the decision to keep going with his plan or stop before someone really gets hurt, maybe even him.

Metacritic Score

  • 60

    Variety Todd McCarthy

Sheer energy and audience allure to burn, even if numerous speed bumps cause many of the comic possibilities to go tumbling overboard.

  • 50

The New York Times A.O. Scott

Starts with a great idea, but the movie's potential drops faster than the tech stocks on the Nasdaq.

  • 40

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

A vaguely amusing formulaic comedy with a premise that turns out to be more discomforting than endearing.
