When Nietzsche Wept begins with Doctor Josef Breuer (Ben Cross) speaking to poet Louise von Salome (Katheryn Winnick) about her mentally ill philosopher friend. The friend in question is the poor and brilliant Friedrich Nietzsche, (Armand Assante) who is not interested in Doctor Breuer's help. In order to treat Nietzsche without his consent, Doctor Breuer and his student Siegmund Freud (Jamie Elman) devise a plan. Doctor Breuer will pose as a patient of Nietzsche's so that he can talk to the distressed philosopher. However, once Nietzsche and Doctor Breuer begin their sessions, the doctor begins to personally benefit from his conversations with the philosopher. The two intellectual men both find benefit in the talents of the other, and begin to realize that they must face up to their own problems before they can help others. When Nietzsche Wept is the story of two brilliant but damaged men, whose lives had a profound influence on the history of philosophy and psychoanalysis.
