Where the Red Fern Grows II is a 1992 film directed by Jim McCullough Jr. and stars Wilford Brimley and Doug McKeon. Based on the classic novel, "Where the Red Fern Grows," this movie picks up on Billy's (McKeon) life as an adult returning from WWII. Billy returns home haunted by his experiences during the war and bitter about having one of his legs amputated. Trying to boost his spirits, Billy's Grandfather (Brimley) surprises him with a pair of redbone hound puppies which are just like the ones Billy had as a boy. However, Billy finds it difficult to connect with anybody or anything in the civilian world and initially keeps his distance from the dogs. Only after a neighbor boy shows an interest in training the dogs for raccoon hunting does Billy warm up to the hounds. Taking the boy under his wing provides Billy with the opportunity to lower his inner walls and make peace with the uncertain and sometimes tragic aspects of life.moreless
