Where the Red Fern Grows is the second big screen adaptation of the beloved children's tale written by Wilson Rawls, released in 2003 by Walt Disney Pictures and featuring supporting performances by some of film's most venerated actors. Twelve year old Billy Coleman (Joseph Ashton, Tarzan, The Education of Little Tree, Slappy and the Stinkers) catches the puppy love disease and works endlessly to earn the $50 needed to buy himself a pair of redbone coonhound puppies. When he gets them, he teaches them to hunt and chases down the coons at the river bottoms near his country home in Oklahoma. After a tragic accident with the two Pritchard boys, Raine and Rubin (Andrew and Stuart Dickison), Billy's grandpa (Dabney Coleman, Cloak and Dagger, War Games, The Beverly Hillbillies, Tootsie, Nine to Five, Melvin and Howard, Dragnet, Clifford) enters Billy, Old Dan and Little Ann in a championship coon hunt.
