Where The Sidewalk Ends is a 1950 noir thriller involving a violent cop creating a web of deceit to cover his own crime. Police detective Mark Dixon (Dana Andrews) has let his hatred for criminals turn him into a violent brute. Cops discover a dead body when investigating Tommy Scalise (Gary Merrill) for running a gambling den in his apartment and clues point to gambler Ken Paine (Craig Stevens). Dixon tracks the suspect down and accidentally kills him during questioning. Dixon secretly disposes of the body, just missing being seen by a cab driver, Jiggs Taylor (Tom Tully). Paine's widow, Morgan (Gene Tierney), also happens to be the daughter of Jiggs. She has also been helping Paine with his criminal activity. Nonetheless, Dixon falls in love with her. The police eventually pick up Jiggs for Paine's murder based on circumstantial evidence. Dixon knows that Jiggs is innocent but cannot clear him without admitting his own guilt. So, Dixon tries to pressure Scalise into making the problem go away. Director Otto Preminger paints a dark character portrait in this classic noir thriller.
