PG-13
Whip It is a comedic film directed by Drew Barrymore that centers on Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page), an oddball small-town girl living in Bodeen, Texas who has no idea what to do with her life outside of getting out of her town. Sharing her dream is her best friend Pash (Alia Shawkat), though Pash plans on college as her escape. Bliss spends her days outside of school working and taking part in the pageants her former beauty queen mother Brooke (Marcia Gay Harden) pushes her into. That is, until she and Pash discover the world of roller derby. Inspired by the game, Bliss buys herself some skates and practices until she becomes a Hurl Scout, a team comprised of typical working women like Maggie Mayhem (Kristen Wiig), Bloody Holly (Zoe Bell), Rosa Sparks (Eve), and Smashley Simpson (Drew Barrymore). Now with her new teammates, she's deemed Babe Ruthless and is considered one of the fastest skaters in the league, even going up against strong Iron Maven (Juliette Lewis). As Bliss slowly comes into her own, even gaining a better understanding of her father Earl (Daniel Stern), she is faced with the potential disaster that would occur if the league knew she lied about her age and if her mother ever found out just where she spends her evenings out.moreless
