Whispering Smith is a 1948 action western film directed by Leslie Fenton and written by Frank Butler and Karl Kamb. It tells the story of a railroad investigator who is forced to track down an old friend who engages in criminal activities after losing his job. Luke "Whispering" Smith (Alan Ladd) is a detective who is assigned to work on a case of train destruction and merchandise theft by a gang of outlaws. Murray Sinclair (Robert Preston) lost his job in the railroad company and joins gangster Barney Rebstock (Donald Crisp) in assaulting trains on route. Although Murray is an old friend, detective Smith is forced to investigate the case and capture Murray to restore justice. Smith is attracted to Murray's charming wife Marian Sinclair (Brenda Marshall), which provides him with additional motivation to capture her husband. However, Murray and his fellow gangsters are not willing to give up their freedom, and Smith encounters fierce resistance as bullets start flying around.moreless
