White Palace is a 1990 romantic comedy that details the love affair of a man and a woman almost twice his age. Max Baron (James Spader) is a twenty-seven-year-old executive, who has been trying to get over the loss of his wife (Maria Pitillo) for almost two years. His best friend Neil (Jason Alexander) is getting married and Max is in charge of picking up the burgers at the White Palace. He gets into a heated debate with forty-three-year-old waitress, Nora Baker (Susan Sarandon) when he realizes that his order is short several burgers. As luck would have it, Max runs into Nora at the bar later that evening and feeling bad about his behavior earlier, he offers her a ride home. When pulling into Nora's house, Max runs into the mailbox and damages his car. He decides to spend the night and the two of them end up in bed together. Max believes that their age and social differences may be too much for them to overcome to have a successful relationship. Then he finds out from Nora's sister Judy (Eileen Breenan) that Nora had a rough childhood and is still trying to deal with the loss of her son. Max feels that their losses may be the bond that keeps them together.
