Whiteboyz is a film all about the character of Flip (Danny Hoch), who is a hip-hop poet with his own crew. He has big dreams of becoming a millionaire off of his songs one day. He grew up in Iowa, but has dreams of moving to the ghettos of Chicago to live with real rappers and to hone his craft. Flip and his friends, Trevor (Mark Webber), James (Dash Mihok), and his girlfriend Sara (Piper Perabo), spend all day driving around in their cars and listening to rap and hip hop songs so that they can find inspiration to write the next big hit. The group seems to be forever stuck in Iowa until they meet Khalid (Eugene Byrd). Khalid is an upper-class black kid who recently moved from Chicago. One night he has a bad run in with the cops and Flip helps him out, and in order to show his gratitude he takes Flip and his friends to the streets of Chicago to help them fulfill their dreams of becoming gangster rappers.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 70

    The New York Times

    Deceptively silly, ultimately intelligent.

  • 40

    Los Angeles Times Gene Seymour

Documents accurately the capacity of pop culture to make mongrels of its consumers. But it doesn't quite know (or want to know) what to make of it.

  • 30

    Variety

Too many scenes play like actors acting rather than life being lived as pic lurches around with ragged variations in tone.
